At the Stem for Life Foundation, we believe cell therapies hold the key to unlock the cure to many of the world’s most debilitating illnesses. We invite you to join us as we explore the exciting world of cell therapy science and the stories of those who have benefited from it.

The History of Cell Therapy and its Promising Future

The exciting field of cell therapy encompasses a wide variety of scientific advancements and medical treatments that focus on the use of cells found within the human body. The purpose of cell therapy is to aid and amplify the body’s natural ability fight disease through a process called the immune response or to repair and restore function of cells and their organs called regenerative medicine. Cell therapy has been used for more than forty years to treat diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma through bone marrow transplants.

There are currently thousands of clinical trials underway to determine if stem cells and other cells of the immune system (including T, dendritic, natural killer, genetically modified, plasma, red blood cells, adipose (fat) cells or cord blood cells) can be used for therapeutic purposes, known as cell therapy. Ongoing medical advancements are now occurring throughout the world. Some of which include: rebalancing our own immune systems; regrowing damaged and diseased organs and tissue caused by heart attacks; growing new skin for burn victims; advancements in pediatric cancers; preventing organ rejection and addressing a range of other conditions and trauma, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and traumatic brain injuries via adult stem cell therapies. REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

There are numerous types of cell therapy. Regenerative Medicine refers to a process used to restore structure and function to damaged tissues and organs by reviving cells that have been isolated from the human body in a laboratory. Treatments are also performed inside the living body to stimulate organs to heal themselves.

Regenerative medicine is a form of cell therapy. Immuno-oncology (therapies which focus on the treatment of cancer through the regeneration of organs and tissues) and immunomodulation (the regulation of immune functions to stimulate the immune system or block those elements which stand in the way of this process) are members of the regenerative medicine family.

Gene therapy is another approach to cell therapy which consists of inserting  a gene into a patient’s cells to help fight disease, inactivating or replacing a mutated gene that is functioning improperly. Each of types of cell therapy offer alternative treatments to the traditional methods of treatment such as pharmaceutical drugs and/or surgery.

The Stem for Life Foundation’s Heroes

For many people, cell therapies offer hope when traditional methods of treatment have failed or have yielded less than desirable results. While countless patients have benefited from stem cell therapies over the past 40 years, those willing to participate in the advancement of medical science as cell therapy patients forge the way for better and more innovative procedures for those patients that follow them.

These unlikely heroes didn’t set out to change the world, but are changing the world of science and medicine every day with their remarkable stories of courage and triumph in the face of adversity. It is our privilege to introduce you to our heroes — remarkable individuals whose lives have been transformed through the use of stem cell therapy. We invite you to read their inspiring stories.

The Healing Cell Book

Already, doctors have used stem cells to grow pouches and channels that replace bladders and windpipes, have used stem cells to grow new vessels that bring blood to dying tissue, and have coaxed stem cells into becoming liver tissue, insulin-secreting beta cells of the pancreas, and even cells that support a beating heart.

We hope the stories within The Healing Cell lead you to see the depth and reach of the possibilities of adult stem cell therapy, understand that the healing potential of these cells is being realized today and help you become as excited as we are about the future of medicine.
